Good for Beginners

Easy to understand. Great for people who need to learn for a class or are just casually interested in Greek mythology. However there are a lot of discrepancies between this book and more scholarly collections of Greek mythology. Small things, but to someone who knows details of stories, to see them left out or misinterpreted is irksome. Guess it just depends on whose retelling of classics you decide is the standard.

Touch base with the god/dess within yourself

This a really good and fun read. It's a lot easier to read than any of the books on mythology that I've ever read, which were quite a few! It makes you realize how much in this world is named after gods, goddesses, and heroes, from the Orpheum Theatre (which I found out is a contradiction!) to Troy's Greek Restaurant. Ms. Hathaway shows how different cultures from all over the world have the same stories with similar characters with similar names. It gives you goosebumps! While this is an easier book to read, it lacks all the drama that all those heavy mythology books have. Her book touches base with most of mythology so there is no deep study of any god or goddess. Ms. Hathaway covers not only the Greeks but Celtic, Chinese, and Norse mythology as well. The only thing that I have to say negative about the book were all the typos! There is a plethora of typos in this book. But if you're looking for a quick intro into mythology, this is your book.

This is NOT a chapter book. It's more like an "activity" book. While my son is enjoying it, he was disappointed that he couldn't really read it like the others. I'll have to pay more attention to the descriptions I guess.

Although I enjoy Patterson's adult mysteries, I was very much surprised to see that he writes such enjoyable books for the
middle school set. My grandson loved the book and I have already gotten him four more by Mr. Patterson, Et al.
Don't worry, this is not anything like his adult terror stories.

You don't have to bug them to read when they have this series They are a fun read.They also like Harry Potter as well. Start with the first one in the series. Excellent review of Mythology through early Christianity

This book provided a fascinating review of early Middle Eastern mythology starting from Mesopotamian culture and proceeding through to Judaism and early Christianity. It also includes a discussion of the importance of myth and ritual as a basis for religious and socialogical structure. The area I found most interesting was the discussion of the influence of the mythology of early civilizations on Judeo-Christian belief and scripture.

Fantastic eye openerThis

I am so glad I found out about this book. Reading it was a major eye opener for me in understanding the early myths from the area where my own (former) religion originated. S. H. Hooke is an expert in mythology, and he does a fantastic job of showing the connections between the myths of the Middle East. For me personally, this helped me see how the roots of Christianity (particularly with ancient Hebrew religions) was inspired greatly by earlier myths. Whether it was the author's intention or not, it also helped me realize that the religion I once thought was real was, in fact, nothing more than a myth that was not unlike so many similar myths of the time and place.

An interesting work

This book has been republished a number of times now and that is probably due to its addressing of a subject that is bound to repeatedly be of interest to a number of people. In a nutshell this brief book discusses a range of myths from the Middle East. It does not claim to be an encyclopaedia of that areas mythology and deities nor does it claim to contain every story of each of the cultures that have come and gone over the years in the region in question. Nor does it set out to any form of historical work in a chronological sense though perforce there is some discussion of the chronology of different cultures in order to discuss their influence on each other.

What the book does do is to present a number of salient stories in readable laymans prose from a range of early cultures of the area. What we also get is a look at how many of the stories many would think of as being from the Christian Bible were quite obviously drawn from earlier works. I'm guessing that might ruffle a few feathers but the author does not dally about with looking too deeply into that aspect of things, he merely draws parallels and leaves it at that.

This isn't a bad book for your history bookshelf though there are undoubtedly far more brightly presented and illustrated works on Middle Eastern pantheons and the like and certainly many of them probably benefit from more recent archaeological work that has been done since its inception and some that will look more thoroughly at individual cultures rather than this broader based work.

Intentionally Irreverent, Accidentally Inspiring: A Male Point of View

You’re probably wondering why a man is reviewing a book that was so clearly written for women. For starters, you’re not the boss of me. Secondly, body positivity is universal. If you’ve ever been given a sideways look while eating in public, had a complete stranger offer advice on how to “fix” you, or skipped a school function because you’re afraid of how your size will deflect ridicule to your child; you’re in this group, and this book is for you. Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, here’s why EVERYONE should read this book; men, women or otherwise.

I flipped to the first page expecting all the things I have come to appreciate from reading Brittany’s blog, following her social media posts, and meeting her in person: willful irreverence, period-specific pop culture references, and slightly cringe-worthy discussions of the hornet’s nest that is the female existence (read: periods, boob sweat, and the like).

And I got it.

I got all the hilarious, foul-mouthed, sexy, movie reference-fueled perspectives and narratives that I was hoping for in a Brittany Gibbons book. As a fan, I’d have been satisfied with that. What I didn’t expect was a series of life stories, experiences, and supremely human moments, all of them told with such a stark honesty that I found myself tearing up on a crowded airplane wondering what the hell was happening with this “comedy” book I was reading.

Reading Fat Girl Walking as a man is like spying on all girls sleepover; not the adolescent fantasy replete with baby doll nighties and pillow fights, but the real, raw, unguarded emotion that only women communing with women feel comfortable sharing.

This book will shock you. Not in the normal boring, “did she really just say that” kind of way, but in the devastating frankness and transparency Brittany shows in the recounting of her life experiences, her rise to “internet famous”, and the long hard road behind her as she defined and refined her message into becoming the resounding voice, smirking face and gorgeous body at the front of this movement

This book will make you cry. There are moments of such humanity and realness that the only response that feels natural is a physical one. Brittany weaves these between humor and levity in a way that never lets you fall too far. I found myself cheering for her and screaming at her as she fumbled through the missteps of her youth and early adulthood as they resonated a little too close to home. Eventually landing right where she belongs, and lighting the path for those behind her.

Maybe, just maybe, this book will inspire you. I feel like I was inspired by Fat Girl Walking as a byproduct. If someone tells me a book is inspirational, I immediately reject it as drivel or something conjured by a distant PhD or B-list celeb that wants a summer home. Brittany set out to tell a story, in her inimitable voice, and entertain the hell out of anyone lucky enough to pick up a copy. This book is inspirational, but I don’t think it meant to be.

Sometimes the fat girl gets cast as the funny friend, and ends up being the star.

If you read nothing else, I implore you to get Fat Girl Walking by the great Brittany Gibbons. There's a reason she's a writer and I'm not because I can't even form the words to tell you how good this book is. I laughed. I cried. I shouted me too! repeatedly. Trust me when I tell you the only disappointment you'll feel upon finishing it is that her next book isn't out yet.

Funny! Relatable! Quick read with a good message for all!

I enjoyed this book and I am not generally a nonfiction fan! If you are a "fat girl walking" like me, you will relate to many of the stories Brittany tells. You will laugh out loud and want to shed a tear once in a while. The message of body acceptance is good for skinny, fat and in between women. One thing that took the book from 4 stars to 3 for me was how it began chronologically but later lost its way and you end up going back and forth from one year to another. This makes it difficult to really see how her career evolved. One day she's on her couch on a laptop and the next she is on all the morning shows. There is a point when I felt like the author just wants to give us a laundry list of all her accomplishments and the book loses focus and some of the good storytelling it began with. Again, it was a worthwhile read and I took the message to heart right down to standing in front of my full length mirror naked ( author's subtle advice)! I would recommend it for a light nonfiction read.
