About the Author

Peter C. Blum is Professor of Philosophy and Culture at Hillsdale College, where he directs their program in Sociology and Social Thought. A graduate of Goshen College, with advanced degrees in sociology and philosophy from the University of Notre Dame, he lives in Hillsdale, Michigan with his wife, Gail. He is a member of Salem Mennonite Church near Waldron, Michigan, and is author of a number of essays relating contemporary social theory to an Anabaptist understanding of Christian discipleship.

Incredible. Nietzsche meets Simons!

Let me just state my bias: Pete is one of my best friends, and I've had the chance to see this book as it was being written. Ok, now that that's out of the way. Pete Blum is one of the finest men I know. He's as honest and open as the day is long. Don't label him, and don't try to box him into some imaginary category. Pete is his own man, and this book radiates integrity. It's a thought experiment in post-modernism and Christianity taken to a beautiful level. Enjoy all that is the mind and soul of Blum!

Mixed Feelings

This is an important topic and there are some OK texts. I don't see a lot of alternatives that have been published so I would still buy this if you are very interested in the subject, but I would first recommend "Interrogating Postfeminism: Gender and the Politics of Popular Culture" by Yvonne Tasker and Diane Negra and "The Aftermath of Feminism: Gender, Culture and Social Change" by Angela McRobbie.

I felt like many of the essays were too short, and ended just as they were approaching substantial ideas. Many of the essays are sketches for proposed case studies or more in depth research. I haven't looked into the credentials of contributors but some of the texts read as if they were written by PhD students. That being said, I really enjoyed some sections, especially "Pregnant Beauty" by Imogen Tyler. I could imagine using some of these essays in an undergraduate course, I just wouldn't assign the entire book.

I don't think Rosalind Gill should have edited this book. I find it really strange that almost every essay prominently cites her texts, it seems like a conflict of interest and makes me suspicious of the integrity of the collection. This certainly reflects the fact that this is a niche field, but bothers me none the less.

There isn't enough written about neoliberalism and postfeminism, and I wanted to love this book, but I did not.

Kunjuswami was an illustrious personality who was blessed with initiation into Panchakshara by Lord Siva Himself in his early life. Kunjuswami’s Reminiscences provide a rare, first-hand account of the early days of Sri Ramanasramam and life at Skandasramam.

The author imbibed the teachings of his Master, took them to heart and dedicated his life to their fulfillment. His own personal experience and life with the Master has generated much interest among devotees. Those who listened to him were transported to a different world altogether.

Kunjuswami lived a contemplative life strictly following the precepts of the Master for over seventy years at Sri Ramanasramam. He rendered invaluable service to devotees by sharing his experiences with the seekers until the ripe age of 95 when he was absorbed in His Master’s Feet.

None could come near his presence without being spiritually elevated. The enthusiasm to follow the Master increased many folds in his presence. He was very free and generous with visitors untiringly sharing his reminiscences. John X. Wang received his PhD from New York University and his bachelor’s degree from the University of Science and Technology in China. In 1982, he was brought to the United States by Professor T. D. Lee, a Nobel laureate in physics, through the well-known China-US Physics Examination and Application (CUSPEA) program. In 1992, Dr. Wang founded his own software business, Poly Software International Incorporated. Due to his contributions to scientific applications and the development of computer technology, Dr. Wang has appeared in the Marquis Who’s Who in America since 2001 and the Marquis Who’s Who in the World since 2002. Linda Hu received her bachelor’s degree from Anhui Normal University in China. She served as a high school teacher at an elite high school in China for several years before settling in the United States with John. Since 1992, Linda has been engaged in her children’s education and the family education consulting field. In 2009, Linda founded a college preparation and application consulting service, IvyTrack (www.ivytrack.com), and currently serves as the company president.

Doubtful and Questionable

It is highly doubtful if the process will work with non-Chinese US raised kids. Have you observed the U.S. raised Chinese kids - they are very obedient and driven to get into Ivy League schools. They will do anything that their parents ask of them to achieve that goal. Try advising an independent minded non Asian teen. Also, out of curiosity I checked out the website "www.ivytrack.com". It is a cram school owned by one of the authors. And to my surprise, the website was in Chinese. And that too it is based out of Connecticut. Based on personal experience, non Asian kids will have a hard time relating to their teachers or the teaching methodology at such places - after all racial conconcordance comes into play in such settings. In summary, this is not meant to take away the work ethics and drive in Chinese parents and their children. As a society we are better off with such immigrants. But I can say with high level of certainty that the methods recommended by the authors will not work with non Chinese or non Korean teens

The authors are continuing their effort to promote developing youth leadership, creativity, and social skills by founding (07/2015) American Youth Leadership Foundation (WWW.AYLFUS.ORG) and Alliance of Youth Leaders in the United States (WWW.AYLUS.ORG). AYLUS now (10/2015) has 19 branches and over 200 volunteers nation wide in less than 3 months.

Great information for high school planning and college application however no financial considerations were addressed

Great book for preparing parents to assist their children to better plan their high school years and college application process. I purchased the book and read the majority of it within a day. The book provided a lot of very useful information. I wish I had it a couple of years earlier so that some of the strategies could be more applicable to my children. On the other hand, the book only discussed how to successfully helping their children to get into all top universities without mentioning any financial considerations. I could understand that for successful business owners the college costs even for top private universities might never be an issue or concern. The children were lucky enough to pick any schools they want to apply to and go to any schools after admission without the need for any financial considerations. However, that's not the case for a lot of other parents. For a lot of other families like mine who may not qualify for any need based financial aids nor have a lot of resources to pay for their children's college costs, the children have to find a balance between which schools to apply to heavily based on financial considerations and may not have the opportunities to consider the very top universities even they may have great potentials to be admitted. Also, the scholarship application part for the second daughter was a little bit confusing: my understanding is that the Gate Millennium Scholarship is for families qualified for federal Pell grant only so a lot of kids are not eligible for applying to it. Overall, it is still a great book with lots of very helpful information.
