Fill-in-the-Blank Plotting combines the two most reliable story structures -- the Hero's Journey and the Three-Act Structure -- and shows writers how to merge them to create a powerful plot.

Some writers are lucky. Plots pop into their heads, fully formed and ready for the page. This book is for the rest of us.

This book combines the two most reliable story structures: the Hero's Journey and the Three-Act Structure, and shows writers how to merge them to create a powerful plot.

For those of us who have to work hard at turning our ideas into a workable story, here is a helping hand. Linda George's method for outlining allows flexibility and ''eureka'' moments, while providing a reliable way to develop scenes, characters, turning points, and other dramatic elements to strengthen your novel.

In this book, Linda shares her two plotting boards, presents the twelve steps of the Hero's Journey, and shows in detail how the Journey fits into the classic Three-Act Structure.

A fill-in-the-blank method may sound formulaic, but proves to be a wonderful platform for creativity -- a sturdy trellis for the climbing vines of your story.

Slim Title Packs Punch
By S.S.
When I first opened the box I thought, "That's it? I paid 12 bucks for a sparknote?"

But George gets the job done in a quarter of the words.

It's a short, quick read with handy charts. I'm a pantser who's rarely plotted in my life. I followed her advice to a T - going to OfficeMax and splurging on post-its, a black corkboard and gorgeous metallic markers - and putting up a storyboard exactly the way she diagrams.

It HELPED.

I'm now super prepared for this year's NaNoWriMo; I understand my plot better and was able to move scenes around and up the ante where it was missing.

I do recommend further reading on the Hero's Journey and some familiarity with it to begin with. It's a weighty topic that's easy to grasp...hard to master. Yeah I said it. :P

Slim but useful book
By Baron Von Cool
I've read a lot of different books on story structure and was annoyed at how each gave a slightly different system. There was no clear way how to integrate them when outlining. This book takes the two most popular story structure models, Joseph Campbell's The Hero's Journey and the classic Three Act structure, and creates a simple process to put them together when creating your outline/plot board using 3x5 cards. It does a good job doing so and provides a reasonable summary of each stage of The Hero's Journey and Three Act Structure using Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. You could probably use the summaries to get by without reading other, more comprehensive books on the subject of story structure, such as The Writers Journey: Mythic Structure for Writers, 3rd Edition, although you would be better served by not skipping them. The last part of the book provides three appendices outlining Treasure Island, Charlotte's Web and Gone With The Wind using the structures.

While it may seem overpriced for some considering the low page count, how much is this information really worth? Would you rather figure all this out on your own and save a few bucks (though not really, as time is money) or would you rather be using your time to outline or write? I know which one I'd choose.

There is one potential problem with the system presented, however, and that is you need to know how many chapters your book will have in order to know where the various steps in the three act/hero's journey structure fall. The system defaults to a 20-chapter template that the creator prefers and all her examples assume that your novel will be the same; she does say that any number of chapters can work, as long it is evenly divisible by four. That's because Act I equals 25% of your book, Act II 50% and Act III, the remaining 25%. Knowing the exact number of chapters needed may present a challenge to authors who write by the seat of their pants rather than plot everything out beforehand, and even to hybrid writers who fall somewhere in-between. Trying to graft this system onto a manuscript in-progress can be problematic as well. Not impossible, but it can induce a headache or two, especially if you have a lot of short chapters or are writing a multiple POV epic like A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1).

My only other complaint is although it is sturdily bound, it looks unnecessarily cheap and amateurish. It definitely has the feel of a vanity press DIY print-on-demand book that somebody with no design skill threw together using default templates. There is too much white space per page. Font choices should have been better, as the font and size used in the plot board (3x5 card) graphics is inexcusably tiny, in a difficult to read semi-cursive, and the main body of the book is sans-serif. In my opinion, it should have been a serif font, such as Times-New Roman, Garamond, Georgia, or something that looked more like a novel instead of a dry, technical manual. Still, I was able to find and comprehend the information I wanted (except for the plot board (3x5 card) graphics that were squished just to make them fit onto one page per example). How hard would it have been to make splash pages where the board was shown over a two-page spread so the cards wouldn't have had to have been squished? That was super-annoying.

For the bad layout and design, I'm knocking a bit off my rating. Books, especially "how-to" non-fiction, should look cool and get me excited to read what's inside, not turn me off before I even crack the cover (and definitely not after I look inside).

Perfect Plotting
By J. OHare
I wish Linda George had released this book back when I first started writing. This easy-to-read volume lays out the entire process, making it super simple to understand how to move from point to point, how to maintain the narrative flow, the character development, and how to keep the action moving. "Fill-In-The-Blank Plotting" helped break through a solid block, launching me in a new direction. Beside having a copy on my reference shelf, I will use this book as a major text for students in my English classes.
