Riveting stories about this "only-in-San Francisco" phenomenon!

Anyone interested in the public nudity phenomenon in San Francisco will find this a "must read", but it goes way beyond just an overview of the amazing happenings the city has recently seen.
San Francisco has long been the benchmark for free-thinking, tolerance, and acceptance of alternative lifestyles of ALL kinds. In the early 1980s, a few adventurous runners decided to cut loose and disrobe during the city's already zany Bay to Breakers footrace. Though police initially attempted to put the brakes on this harmless, free-spirited activity it soon became apparent that momentum was building. The public loved seeing the naked folks and the media took every opportunity to give them positive attention. Today, there are literally hundreds of nude participants in Bay to Breakers, held each year on the third Sunday in May. Other popular annual events, including the Folsom Street Fair and the Pride Parade also welcome those who prefer to be "unencumbered" by clothing.
But beyond these "special events", it became apparent that San Francisco had no law on the books that forbid simple nudity so an unrivaled window of opportunity opened up. It wasn't until the last decade that a new phase began and this involved a few brave souls testing the waters by simply strolling down their neighborhood streets "au naturel". The Castro was home to much of this nudity and it got to where the sight of a naked man or woman walking down the street in the city barely (no pun intended) raised any eyebrows. All looked very bright for forward-thinking people who simply believed that what you do or don't wear should be a personal choice. Nudists were blending in with the clothed masses and no one seemed too bothered by it all. This grand social experiment appeared to be a wonderful success . . . until self-serving politics intervened.
A recent scientific poll revealed that over 63 percent of San Francisco residents approve of public nudity but that didn't stop a powerful group of conservatives to pressure their local supervisor to eradicate what they saw as the nudist "blight". He engineered a multi-step campaign to malign a group of citizens who were causing no harm whatsoever and eventually orchestrated legislation that many liberal residents were horrifed by. Initially proposing restrictions on nudists that included requiring them to sit on a towel when out and about, many saw this as supporting the naked folks. In fact, it was designed to not only support them but encourage MORE to arrive on the scene. This shrewd supervisor knew that his colleagues would never support the city-wide ban that he really wanted just to deal with what amounted to a dozen local nudists annoying some of his consituents so he intentionally created what he'd be able to call an "epidemic". It worked!
Popularity soared and happy nudists arrived from all over the country, and even the world. 2012 proved to be an amazing year of wonderful experiences for "urban nudists" and these people encountered a great many enthusiatic citizens on the street. Many residents were justly proud of their city's fabled tolerance and took the time to let nudists know they were welcome. It appeared to be a "win-win" for everyone but rather than encourage these good folks to bring their hard-earned vacation money to San Francisco, the city decided to shun them. After a valiant battle where nudists produced significant evidence of support for their cause, the city's Board of Supervisors passed an all-city nudity ban by the narrowest of margins. Five of eleven supervisors showed the courage to see through the deceipt and subterfuge and they're a source of pride for all who value personal freedom. Six others, however, had their minds made up long before a public opinion hearing where not coincidentally exactly 63 percent (remember that scientific poll?) of those in attendance, many of them not even nudists, spoke out agaist the ban. Clearly it was a battle the nudists were destined to lose but it started what may be a war that they will eventually win. The fight for justice goes on in many forms, not least of which is a lawsuit challenging the legality of the ban.
This book is a sizable collection of stories from those who particpated in the incredible public nudity experience that could only have happened in a city as open-minded as San Francisco. We can only hope that the city's spirit of freedom prevails sooner rather than later and you'll once again be able to stop a nudist on the street and say hello.
