Mauro Giuliani (1781-1829), a contemporary of Beethoven and Schubert, was a musician with a mission: to raise the recently invented (but rather quiet) six-string guitar to a level of musical prominence in a world inclined to favor ever-louder operatic, pianistic, and symphonic music. During the years 1806-1819, while he lived in Vienna, Giuliani’s dazzling performances made him the darling of that city, whose press and public hailed him as the greatest guitarist of his generation. His guitar works, rich in chamber music, were published by the foremost Viennese publishers and widely acclaimed. Against all odds, this poor guitarist of modest south-Italian origin made a place in history for himself. He was decisive in launching the classical guitar in central Europe as a versatile instrument capable of moving and enchanting audiences when played with skill and musicianship.

Important new edition of an essential biography

Heck's pathbreaking research on the great Giuliani did for guitar scholarship what Segovia had done for the guitar itself. It established that the guitar had played an important role in the musical life of Vienna in the age of Beethoven and Schubert, and that the instrument had composers, performers, and repertory that were admired by many of the greatest composers of the age. It also inspired a renaissance of interest in Giuliani's music. Since then, Marco Riboni and others have made some important additions to our knowledge of Giuliani; this new edition of Heck's classic study conveniently incorporates all of the new information available as of the date of publication. An invaluable work of scholarship. I only regret that it is not available in a print edition. Perhaps at some point it will be?

A Goldmine of Information

Dr. Heck is the world's foremost authority on Mauro Giuliani. This publication is the culmination of many years of research, including previously unknown information, images, and documents. It is not meant to be a compelling "story" as one reviewer has suggested; instead, it fully explores the historical record as we know it--and this at times includes conflicting data, as all good scholarly editions must do. This is a great book!

Shame

I'm completely disappointed with this new electronic edition, mainly because it is now without the thematic catalogue of Giuliani's works. I have a copy of the original T Heck's PhD as a paper printout which due to the binding is rather uncomfortable in use, but at least it has a proper catalogue of works. Now I thought it is just updated, but no -- it's only a simplified list of compositions. Good and indispensable tool just degenerated, shame.
