About the Author
Sam Carrington lives in Devon with her husband and three children. She worked for the NHS for 15 years, during which time she qualified as a nurse. Wanted to like it...

I was actually really looking forward to reading this book. It sounded like exactly the kind of story I love, a "gripping psychological thriller" (although I do hate it when they put it in the title) but unfortunately in this instance it failed to deliver for me.
So the book blurb intrigued me and the social media buzz about it was considerable, but it wasn't far into the story that the problems become apparent. First, most of the dialogue doesn't ring true, and characters ask themselves dozens upon dozens upon dozens of introspective questions, which was a very odd technique employed by the author and slowed the book down in my opinion.
That being said the premise of this book is a good one. Your daughter is brought home one night by the police and she can’t remember anything that happened the night before past a certain point. The police had found her wandering around an area not usually frequented by her or her friends and mumbling incoherently. One of Sophie’s friends is missing and she isn’t being very helpful to her parents or the police. Does she know what happened? Is she hiding something from her parents?, the police?
This is the story of a mother and daughter who basically make all of the wrong choices right from the beginning of this incident. Sophie’s mother, Karen, is basically home bound after suffering an attack herself some time in the past. She is an emotional wreck and doesn’t know how to deal with her daughter or her husband for that matter. You would think that between the mother, father and daughter one of them would come to the conclusion that calling the police is the right thing to do, but that isn’t the case.
I’m starting to think that maybe I’ve just read way too many really well executed psychological thrillers so it’s rare that I’m truly gripped and horrified. While there were certain aspects of Saving Sophie that I liked, I had just as many overall issues. I will say that I would be interested in seeing what Sam Carrington writes next and that I can definitely see the appeal for some people. For me it's probably a 2.5 stars but I'll give it 3 stars as it's a debut and I love supporting authors.

Middling plot and writing

I've read many a thriller and this one was more disappointing than gripping. The plot did have many a twist and a turn, but it felt contrived rather than artful and truly suspenseful. The characters were one-dimensional, although I did appreciate the creative changes in narrator and point of view to introduce the main twist.

A Gripping Disaster

This convoluted plot is filled with the most dysfunctional characters who, faced with common sense, always choose complete stupidity. The key description for this book is "Depressing". An agoraphobic mother with a daughter whose best friend is murdered tries to "protect" her daughter from a murderer by doing what? Lying to the police? Lying to her husband? Are all English family dynamics this wretched? The unsatisfying ending leaves you with so many questions. The main one being "Did the author lose her pen and just give up on the ending and walk away?" This book is soul-less. Walk away from it.

Worth the Wait

I was eagerly awaiting this book, having pre-ordered it some time before it was available.

It was worth the wait.

It had most of what I needed and more than I expected. I learned a great deal about the Ford Modular V8s, though not everything I wanted to learn. Among the high spots of this book is that it's as much a basic "performance" manual as it is a "rebuild" manual. There are lots of useful upgrade tidbits contained within, which is really a bonus above the more practical primary purpose of the book. Fortunately, the author didn't supplant any rebuild material for the performance stuff. The other useful element is that the engine is thoroughly explained and dissected to give a new owner the basic foundation for understanding this unusual engine. If you are an "old time" gearhead like me, used to the big iron V8s of yesteryear, the reorientation is useful.

The book is well organized and well laid out and fairly easy to navigate- which is fortunate, because it is not indexed. That's my segue to the more critical part of this review. Any book of this type should have an index. I understand the reasons why books are not indexed, which are primarily financial in nature, but every technical book like this should have an index and I knock off "points" for any that aren't. The other area in which I deducted points for this particular book is in how the author discusses lubricants. This is a topic on which I have a bit of knowledge and I think the author was barely able to make the target, let along hit close to the center. I knocked a coupla points off for that. Personally, I wanted to see more on the Variable Valve Timing of the later model engines, a topic Reid barely touched upon. Is that an oversight or merely him focusing on more relevant topics? I don't know the modular engine community well enough to say, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I come at this from the truck end and this book is more geared to the car and performance car side. Anyway, the book did an admirable job of answering my many basic questions and moving my level of knowledge well up the ladder from a foundational point. It's well worth the financial investment and the time it takes to digest.

Good Second Source

I have found over the years (I'm 72) that many "technical manuals" spend a lot of time on the author's opinion of the object they are trying to discuss. This book is extremely helpful for those who have never overhauled a "modular" Ford engine and I would not recommend trying to do so, without reading this or other "tech manuals" (including the Ford Service Manual). I have the Ford Service Manual but I wanted another "take" on the process. This book clearly meets that objective. The reason I rated it at only 3 stars is that the quality of the printing and the fact that the pictures have not been updated to show later models. Also the quality of the photographs are poof.

Decent book, but ...

I recently bought a new Mustang GT. It's my first Ford since a '91 Probe. I had a '69 Corvette (350/350) for 27 years, but just sold it after having completely rebuilt / renewed it. I wanted to move from Classic Muscle to Modern Muscle and wasn't interested in paying a premium (above sticker) for a Challenger or Camaro. The Mustang is GREAT. I've been a Chevrolet enthusiast for years, but now I want to learn more about Ford's 4.6L 3-valve V8. So, based on the title of this book and its publication year (2009) I thought there was a good chance that it would help me understand more about the 4.6 engine. The book has very good information about Ford's modular engines, and I learned a lot reading the book. But, for the 4.6 engine the book mostly covers 2-valve and 4-valve engines and those engines that are naturally aspirated (carbureted). This is a good book for learning about the Ford modular engines, but if you want to learn about the 4.6L 3-valve V8, you may need to supplement this book with information from another source ... I'm still searching for that other source.

Absolutely the best preparation I did for the PE Exam

I'd spent about 3-4 months working through a thermo textbook, a fluids textbook, and Lindeberg's Practice Problems 12e to accompany the MERM. About 1 month prior to the exam, I ordered this, ferreted myself away into a University library during spring break week with the books I was planning on taking to the exam, and took this practice exam under time pressure. It's the single best preparation activity I did for the PE exam. It showed me what the test was actually like, what the time pressure felt like and how fast I needed to run the calculator. It actually showed me that I could relax a little bit. The test showed me where I was competent and where I needed to improve. I used the following month to shore up where I fell short, and as a result I tackled the PE exam with no problems.

This is a fair comparison to the test, I feel that it's absolutely representative.

Great study tool for the PE Exam.

The question format is very similar to that of the real exam. I used this book to simulate the exam by setting a timer for 4 hours to do the morning problems, took an hour lunch break, then four more hours for the afternoon problems. It was a good way to get a feel for the exam. It also helped me know what what areas I needed to improve.

Would not take the PE Exam without it

Best textbook I've ever bought. EASILY worth the price.

This may be the only book published in the last half century for which I'd pay this price. I've bought hundreds of textbooks over my history; this one is easily the best and most relevant of them all.

The course from which this is taken is the exceptional. The material on covenant alone is worth the price of the book. Seriously, this is the best textbook on the King and the Kingdom that you'll ever encounter.

A good overview, Biblical events in context, easy to understand

Although I still need to think about some of what the author said, this book is well organized, well written, and easy to follow. The author explains about the 5 covenants that are covered in the Bible: Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, and Jesus, the time frame for each, and how they fit together. I have a much better understanding now of the New Covenant and the difference between the old and new, and where we as 21st century believers fit in. I recommend it for anyone who wants a good historical overview of the Bible.

I can't put this book down. I am learning so much and it is bringing new life to my understanding of who God is. I rarely pay that much for a book, but like other reviewers have said, it is worth every penny. I have learned things in this book that I have never heard before and they make perfect sense once you see them. Get this book!

Mandala is a Sanskrit word for circle and is a sacred, symbolic diagram used for contemplation. In Buddhism and Hinduism, mandalas usually include images of Buddhas or deities. Yantra is a Sanksrit word for "instrument", and is meant to inspire inner visualizations, meditations, and spiritual experiences. However, since the two terms are often used interchangeably, the word mandala usually refers to any circular image or diagram.

Create Your Own Sand Mandala by Eileen M. Rose and Abby Rose Dalto is a boxed kit that enables you to make your own sand mandalas in the tradition of Tibetan Buddhists. Traditionally, the art of constructing sand mandalas is an ancient Tibetan ritual art that requres extensive training, a high level of artistic skill, and hours of meticulous work.

However, the sand mandala is not permanent (glued). They are constructed with impermanence and non-attachment in mind, as well as specific intent. When a sand mandala is constructed, more emphasis is placed on improving the mind of the practitioner and contributing to the greater good of the world than on producing a work of art. After the construction of a mandala, the sand is brushed to the center and scattered in the nearest body of water, representing a dispersion of the intent.

The circle has been a sacred symbol for eons, showing up in such forms as Native American Medicine Wheels, gothic Rose Windows, Labyrinths, halos, astrological charts, Celtic designs, alchemical symbols, and so on. There are many ways to construct mandalas, and some forms are permanent--created with paint, fabric, found materials, crushed glass, colored pencils, computer generation, etc. Circles represent wholeness, and coloring or constructing mandalas can be used for meditation, healing, and positive intent.

Create Your Own Sand Mandala includes a 96 page book with full color illustrations, bags of sand in five sacred colors (red, yellow, green, blue, and white), 4 glossy, cardboard templates for guidance,a metal funnel to direct the flow of the sand, and a brush for sweeping up the sand.

The authors provide colorful examples of personal mandalas, as well as circular forms found in architecture, art, and sculpture, and explain the meanings of colors, totem animals, and sacred geometry. Step-by-step instructions are given to help prepare yourself and the items for mandala construction for meditation, healing and prayer, as well as explaining the many uses of mandalas. It is recommended that you start from the center of the circle when creating a mandala. Many religions acknowledge a sacred center within, whether it be called Soul, Christ within, or Higher Self. Accessing and contemplating this sacred center is the reason for beginning at the middle. Although geometric designs are often used in mandalas, you can make it as personal and free-form as creating a sunny meadow or self-portrait. Breaking Barriers

I love this book! This subject/teaching has helped me break through the barrier that I had in my spiritual life. I now feel connected with God and am in communion with him daily. This is the greatest feeling in the world! For anyone who is having difficulty feeling spiritual, give this a read and/or check out his web site. There are many resources on there that will really help you. A fair warning though -- Andrew's not like any other minister. He gives it to you straight up, which is the way I prefer it. He's easy to understand and doesn't beat around the rose bush. May you find the peace that I have.

This book was the first book introducing me to Andrew Wommark teachings that revolutionize my love for God and help me to come out of a 25yr drought in spirituality life and allowing Gods His unconditional love to penetrate the years of harding of my heart by peeling away each layer through His grace. I believe that Andrew Wommark teachings and through one of his books is one of the best bible teachers today and truly has a heart to encourage believers to become a disciple of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

New Light of Understanding of God's Word

Pastor Wommack has a vast understanding of God's Word and even though I have been involved in the Church for over 20 years, he has shown me new light for MY understanding. Now I manifest the promises of God I could only keep praying for in the past. In Hardness of Heart, Pastor Wommack shows from the Bible how even Jesus Christ's first disciples showed a hardness in heart, simply because they did not believe in Jesus's ability to save them from the storm after they had already seen the miracle of the five loaves and fishes. Pastor Wommack goes on to show more examples, his own examples so that we can relate. He then goes on to show us HOW to get up and out of a hard hearted attitude and mindset, for prosperous results.

Carry It On offers a nuanced picture of the OEO, an agency too broadly criticized; a new look at the rise of southern Black Power; and a compelling portrait of local citizens struggling for control over their own lives. Ashmore provides a more complete understanding of how southerners worked to define for themselves how freedom would come during the years shaped by the civil rights movement and the war on poverty.

I bought this book as a source reference, and it did not disappoint. I was involved in a very small way in some of the events covered in one of the chapters in the book. Professor Ashmore's book provided not only the big picture but also valuable insights and details of the incredibly complex political and social events of the time. It is well written and very well researched. The chapter notes and references alone are worth the price of the book.

Carol Ottolenghi has written nonfiction and fiction books for adults and children for almost 20 years. In 1996, she won the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators Magazine Merit Honor Award. One of her stories was selected for Best of the Children's Market by the Institute of Children's Literature. She currently lives in Ohio.

Spanish to English childrens books.

The Spanish to English childrens books, are great for kids from 80yrs to 3yrs!!. Everyone enjoys a story. These books help Grannies and Granpa's of dual language children, to learn another language. And also to have fun while doing it!. Thats what its all about HAVING FUN. Thanks and keep them coming.

Could be better.

I love all of the series. I like that they are bilingual, so that Both my husband and I can read it in our native languages. We have a lot of books on English that I translate on my head, so I can read them to my daughter. My problem with this book is the spanish wording. I know this book is mean for older kids, but I read it to my 2 year old and I don't like that they translate the word bully for maton (which means killer in spanish). They used the word through most of the book. I personally replace bully for abusivo, which I think is a better fit and less intimidating for my litle one.

The Tree Billy Goats Gruff Bilingual

This is a great book in English and Spanish. Great for parents that are trying to teach their children Spanish or English.
