Lou Cannon truly understood Ronald Reagan

I have a unique perspective about Ronald Reagan. My father ran ran all his campaigns for Governor of California and President in 1980 and 1984. Many others have claimed that title. However, President Reagan always know my Dad understood him well and relied on his policial sense. That is because for personal reasons Dad ran President Ford's race against Reagan in 1976 and defeated Reagan. The only defeat Reagan faced.

My point of this story is that Lou Cannon was on the story every step of each campaign, California and Washington, DC. He was trusted by all those trusted by Ronald Reagan. He understood Reagan's core values, he understood that that President was one of us. However,Lou also understood that Reagan was at peace with himself. President Reagan believed all people should be free. He didn't believe that government should tell us what to do with our freedom. This freedom came with a price -- personal responsibility. It was a simple concept to President Reagan. Lou Cannon captures all these, and much more, very important points about President Reagan.

Many people have attributed certain political beliefs to President Reagan. Some are true, many are not. Lou helps straighten these out.

Reagan is already rated the sixth greatest President. For that reason alone, Lou's book is a must read.

THE book on the Reagan Presidency

Like Clinton and GW Bush, Reagan will be argued over for decades to come. Did he win the Cold War? Did he bust the budgets sending us into mountains of debt? Did he bring about the great economic times of the 1980s? Did he just put a smile over the real problems of regular Americans? And what about Iran-Contra? Your answers depend on your political ideology. Both conservatives and liberals will stretch, bend, and lie to make Reagan's achievements or dissapointments match up with their ideological bent. These wing-nuts will ignore tons of facts that argue against their position. This will also be the case for Clinton and GW Bush. So it is.

Cannon, however, has written the single greatest book on the Reagan Presidency. Unlike the liberals who took pot-shots shortly after Reagan left office, or the conservatives who are trying to rewrite the past with overly glowing accounts, Cannon wrote a book whose format should be followed for every president after they leave office: thoroughness and fairness. Cannon, who covered the Reagan White House for the Washington Post, was so much more than just a journalist when he wrote "Role of a Lifetime." He was part political scientist, part psychobiographer, a small part memoirist, and, indeed, he still didn't forget the writing skills of a well-trained journalist.

If you're a hardcore conservative or liberal, you will not love this book. It doesn't kiss Reagan's ass, nor does it only tear him apart. The man did some good and some bad in the White House. Cannon does as good a job as possible in being fair about it.

Needlework of all kinds

This book is just packed full of information of all kinds of needlework and is easy to read and understand.
I have been looking for a book that would be helpful in showing differents stitches in knitting and crocheting and found to my amazements that this book was just perfect. It not only showed crochet and knitting stitches, it had embroidery, needlepoints and more.
I have ordered two more books since I first ordered my book and found it so informative. I purchased one for my friend "Maria" and one for my daughter "Ann".

If there were more craft books like this one, I wouldn't need so many craft books! This one has it ALL.

Yes, some have pointed out that the projects are somewhat dated. Published in 1979, the Complete Guide to Needlework is 6 years older than I am. However, if you're interested enough in crafting to even read it, you should be creative enough to improvise.

If there's a knit stitch or applique technique you just can't find, maybe it's in here. Trust me, it's all here. And with so many available used for under $1 on this site, it's a fantastic find.

I was so lucky to find this book! It's an older book and I was so afraid that I'd never find it in print, but here it was! It's the most complete crafts book I've ever seen. Lot's a photos, diagrams, examples, easy to follow. If you went into a craft shop and bought the small instruction books, you'd spend 10 times this just to gather all the information included in this book..yes, it's that good. Great for beginners and pros, everyone can find something.

Trace & Olivia meet up again with the Willow Creek characters...with their children!

This book was a fun read for me from beginning to end. From getting to know the very interesting personality of Willow, to the protective Dean who likes to do things for her. From learning how to read a map, drive, sitting atop dragons and more things that they do on their driving adventure this story is full of a blossoming romance that neither is sure they're ready to admit to, even though they start to realize just days into the journey that they have feelings for the other. I couldn't help but to giggle at many of the antics of Willow, and grinned at Dean and his "I'm going to stick with her no matter what" attitude when she got overly silly. Micalea Smeltzer did a great job bringing to us the first of the children from her other two series. I hope you find lots of humor in this book, especially with Willow's dad and his text messages like I did. It is really neat to watch things unfold and bring together these kids. Enjoy the book, I cannot wait for more to come out!

Love this author and this book!

The Road That Led to Us is a start of a new series, but also a new generation. It is the first book in the Us series, but the characters in the book are the children on the characters in the Willow Creek and the Trace + Olivia series. So this series is good for those who want an update on their favorite characters, while falling in love with a whole new set.

The Road That Led to Us follows Willow and Dean. Willow is the daughter of Maddox, the famous drummer from the band Willow Creek. She has had a hard time being in the spotlight as she is a free spirit at heart. Dean is a Wentworth. The Wentworth is a name that is well known as well, but Dean lives his life as a mechanic, which is what he loves to do. Dean and Willow have been best friends their entire lives. Willow, itching for an adventure, goes to Dean and they end up deciding to go on a cross country road trip. What ensues is a wonderfully sweet story of two friends exploring more than the country.

Dean is the first character I really see starting to change. I think this is because he has a calm and accepting personality. This is a nice contrast to Willow's spunky and spontaneous personality. Willow really brings out the adventurous side to Dean, which is a role reversal for most books you read. Willow has some evolving to do as well. She is nineteen and has no clue what she wants to do with her life. I really enjoy her story because most nineteen year old's have similar thoughts about their lives and not wanting to disappoint.

This story is more sweet, but does have some heat. As the road trip progresses, these two best friends learn more about each other and bond after sharing experiences together. This evolves fairly quickly, which I thought was a bit quick, but enjoyed nevertheless. Their interactions with each other are some of the sweetest I've ever had the pleasure to read about.

The plot of this story I felt was lacking. I enjoyed the idea of where the author was going, but I feel like there was something missing. I didn't feel fully satisfied with the way the story was developed. This is my only real complaint though. I liked the book otherwise.

Overall, this was a wonderful book. I really like Micaela's stories and I love that she decided to show the next generation. This book was both humorous and philosophical. Some of the best quotes I will now think of comes from, this book. I would recommend this book to others.

I do like the idea of a road trip new adult romance, I have read some amazing ones that I have adored to pieces so I was definitely curious about this one after discovering the book by chance because of that cover. It is so clean and edge and draws you in and I took a chance with

The Road That Leads to Us is my first book of this author and had no clue this book as tied to previous two different series of this author. Whilst I didn’t feel anything amiss by only discovering these characters now, I do want to know more about these characters family .

Willow Wade just wants to forget her first year of college and take a summer road trip with her friend s to sort out her thoughts and plan for her future. However they have other ideas for the summer and bail on her and she returns home to with a crazy idea to still do the trip but with someone she trusts.
Dean her childhood friend and close family friend has always been her confident and she turns to him with hopes of offering a solution to her summer and plans. Instead he offers the road trips she wants , knowing that something is on her mind and that she needs it , not expecting what happens when they set off on Willow’s Epic Road Trip.

A road trip that truly represents what I love about road trips. Whimsically, no plans and random, well they had one destination. Malibu to visit Liam, her cousin, ( I do hope this broody surfer gets a story at some point) added an interesting secondary story. However this story is their’s and you have to wonder why now ?

The Road That leads To Us, isn’t a fast moving romance. It slow and gradual as we get first insight to them into their friendship and how eventually they were might for each other. Whilst they might be exploring their romance for most of the book, the relationship seems to me at time, best friend level. Though there is undoubtable fact that Dean always been there for Willow and let face it , a guy who wants to help out a girl and go on a road trip. There must be feelings as Willow’s Dad could see it

Now I had no indication that was the first in a series and whilst I feel there was slight problems with the book , I hold hope that further book in the series will solve them and offer as solutions. As this is only the beginning of their story. I liked that the author actually is working with her characters, not forcing them to reach the magical HEA in one book. These two are young and have their lives in front of them.

Klein's survey of the history of cigarettes and their gestalt of ritual, seduction, contemplation, and danger is fruitful and often surprising. For Native Americans, tobacco was a minor divinity, and smoke a prayer. For writers and artists, smoking has often been part of the creative process. The sharing of cigarettes has long been a gesture of courtship and sensuality, an expression of rebelliousness and bravado, and a balm for the terrors and tragedy of war and other intolerable circumstances. As Klein discusses the representation of cigarettes in literature and film, he also tracks various attitudes toward smoking. He believes the current zealous condemnation goes far beyond matters of health and drifts into issues of personal freedom. But he never denies the fact that smoking cigarettes is bad for you. Many people, deciding to quit smoking, go cold turkey; others use nicotine gum or a patch. Klein (French/Cornell), however, has taken a unique approach: the writing of this learned, elegant, and fanciful analysis of--and ``elegy'' for--the cigarette. Smokers smoke not just for the nicotine, contends Klein, but also--perhaps primarily--because cigarettes offer ``a darkly beautiful, inevitably painful pleasure that arises from some intimation of eternity.'' By granting access to this sublimity- -which the author says can transform even one's relationship to time (``cigarettes are fiery batons with which you can summon the future and conduct it'')--smoking becomes a symbolic act, a ``dance'' performed between the smoker, the cigarette, and the world; furthermore, it's only by knowing this dance in all its allure that a smoker can then forsake it. Klein examines smoking's symbolic powers through a wide range of cultural references, from Sartre to Mallarm‚, Bizet's Carmen, and Casablanca. Crucial to his argument is his analysis of the first chapter of Italo Svevo's 1923 novel, The Confessions of Zeno, in which the narrator recalls his life as a series of health-oriented resolutions to quit smoking- -each resolution followed always by another cigarette. It's only when, as an old man, he realizes that he's already healthy--i.e., alive--and that smoking is just one way of life, that he quits. In fact, holds Klein, it's not the dream of health that primarily drives America's current antismoking campaigns; rather, it's moralists' censorship of cigarettes' ``discursive performance,'' which hitherto has ``regularly been linked to strong currents of sexual and political freedom.'' Some might find all this just a smoke screen hiding addiction's raw grip--but, even so, it's a lovely one, full of delightful whirls of logic and puffs of insight; moreover, Klein claims that the writing of it has allowed him to quit, ``definitively.'' A superbly spun, well-researched "In Your Face" to the Nanny State!

In this iconoclastic gem of a book, Klein manages to provide a wonderful tool to those of us readers who resonate with his wonderful voicing of one giant "in your face" to the new and stultifying "Nanny State". This statement summarizes the message of "Cigarettes are Sublime" !
Usually we who chafe at "Big Brother" telling us how to treat our bodies, resort to arguments like: "Well, I want to have the right to smoke on my balcony at work 'dammit'!" Such protest can sound a bit like an adolescent stamping one's foot. Klein however, in this so well-spun book, with its rich historical analysis spanning many cultures, gives us a unique and powerful tool to use, in voicing our protest.
"Cigarettes are Sublime" manages to capture what is the CULTURALLY EMBEDDED power, and perhaps (if you agree with Klein) what is in fact the VALUE, as means of self-expression, of smoking, as a social symbol and act. As the Editorial reviews note, "vices" in general (drinking, playing poker, smoking, eating gloriously at sumptuous tables with friends) are all very powerful "games" or "props" in that very underappreciated arena of how we humans "play" with each other in private life--what mischief we toy with, what message we project to others about our "attitude"; to death, to sex, to an embrace vs rejection of the message (broadcast daily in ominous bulletins from our media),that our bodies are entities vulnerable and besieged by a barrage of "risks" that we must always vigilantly guard against, at any cost, including sacrifice of our bodies as instruments of pleasure and work. In this light, the puff on a cig is not JUST recklessness, but in fact, can give that same royal pleasure that one gets in reveling on one's roof to catch rays, as others , anxiously monitoring the daily published "cancer index" of the sun, huddle indoors.
Seen from this very often ignored angle of pleasure and play and social intercourse, cigarettes--as are so many of our personal habits and messages to others in our myriad relationships--are a sublime pleasure in the playground of life, the very thing that those who cry for quantity of life, ignoring quality of the play, indeed need heed, if life is what they wish to "celebrate".

I can not remember the last time I read such a well written book. Klein is an amazing wordsmith & this book is a treasure in understanding the lure, beauty, and sublime charms which keep 1.4 billion people in the world smoking every day.

Leisured, Surprising and maybe even Universal.

I adored this intelligent, iconoclastic book, and wrote a long review on a blog that ceased to exist... Suffice it to say that if you enjoy flirting with academic seriousness, yet don't want to drown in it, then you will adore this based on style alone. Mr. Klein writes with a non-chalance and thoroughness that only an official 'Reader' at a university ever really attain. Treasure this read, and enjoy it's many yet leisured tangential reflections on ... Life.

A remarkable, unforgettable story that will have you wanting more!

Oh Wow!

This book was worth the wait! I tried to read it slowly, I even forced myself not to start reading it right away; but damn it I just couldn't. This book, this series, is just too good.

Right out of the gate we're trusted into madness as our fearless clumsily hero, Aurora, scrambles about trying to fight off killer demon's, that she can only see, while trying to salvage the date her and Aden are on. There is fast solid action, gun fire, explosions and just play old crazy. The kicker, this all happens in the first few chapters. Talk about an entrance. It was glorious!

We're also introduced to some new characters, well one character in perceptual, dreamy Christiano. In truth I wasn't to keen on him at first, but damn it was hard not to get distracted by his hotness and his slurry ways. I have a new crush, Team Christiano, don't worry Jayden I have room in my heart to a multitude of fiction male characters.

But, my real enjoyment is the interactions between the Hex boys. Growing up with brothers, crazy cousins, a metal family, and now in the Military working mostly with men, it's a warm fuzzy to read such real interactions and witty banter. It brings back memories and gets me laughing like a crazy person (my dad has given me few WTF looks while reading this wonder). Not only the banter, but the writing flows in this off-rhythm smoothness that isn't like anything I have ever read before. I don't believe I have witness a story, either written or in media (movies. TYV) where there are no plot holes. This is dedication to the craft and a love of writing that shows through, in this work of crazy art.

Then there is Aurora, oh Aurora, how do you managed to tie your shoes and come out unscaved? You're like the most luckily and unluckiest person that ever walked the face of the earth, and will, hell. A cockroach got nothing on you my dear. Besides her weird ability test the bodies limited on thriving to survive, Aurora's mind is on another plain. I love it! You know what else I love? She always give her unknown assailants nicknames. Razor Rick, Armani, ha! Spectacular!

Besides her being bluntly awesome, she is, to me, real. She isn't perfect, she gets afraid and she doesn't always win. There is scene where her PTSD is triggered, how she reacted, the flashbacks, and fear that surged all at once had me catching my own breath and wishing I could help. These are the moments that makes the story more then just a story. It brings the reader there, with our hero, connecting our hearts and feeling their pain. It is this ability that makes a story remarkable, unforgettable, rather then another okay read stocked in the back and soon forgotten from our short attention span minds.

Now I would like to touch on the principal, Angie Clarke. She wasn't a big character and didn't have a lot of screen time, but she was a character I named because I was lucky enough to win a giveaway that was host last year, through the blog tour of Drop Dead Demons. I'm please (giggly really) with this character and happy to see my friend's name forever immortalized in the written word. Sadly Angie passed away six years ago of heart failure. She was 19, sick most of her life, but lived like most of us don't. I never knew a girl more alive, bright and kind. She would've loved the character A&E Kirk conjured up. Thank you, she's alive again, living in your wonderful, crazy world, where anything can and will mostly likely happen.

I highly recommend this book, this series. There isn't anything out there like it, and believe me I know, I make it my mission to search for these hidden original gems that get lost among the cookie cutter clutter that is YA. You will get hooked on this series, and you will never find another book like it.

Loved the Book...

I finally finished reading the book. I have to admit I loved it. This book is nonstop action from the very beginning. The book starts off with Aurora waiting for Ayden at a restaurant cuz she's on a date and well, what's a date without some demons, eh? And so it begins... :)

Lots of ups and downs. There are some new characters added namely, Cristiano and Horus. I loved them both. Horus does not have much screen time in the book but whatever little there is he is just hilarious. His character is done well and I hope we get to see a lot of him in the next book. He is a straightforward, emotionally and socially awkward person but his heart is in the right place. Cristiano, hmmm...one word - Ahhmazing. I enjoyed reading about him a LOT. Not to mention, I really liked his and Aurora's chemistry together. It is on a different level than Aurora and Ayden. We're still not sure about Cristiano's reason for helping Aurora. But, he is always there to help her and support her. On top of it all he's a Sicarius - intense and deadly too. I definitely want to know MOAR about Cristiano and his deep desire to keep Aurora safe ;)

Traitor, we finally find out WHO the traitor(s) is and how they orchestrated the whole thing. It was sort of a surprise to be honest when I found out who all was involved.

The best part - Aurora's stupid-O-meter seemed to have toned down a LOT from book 2. She either did not have a lot of time to make stupid decisions (like she did in book 2) or she finally grew up/realized that there are smarter ways of doing things. You can decide ;)

Just to warn that the Hex boys are MIA in part of the book. There's a reason for that. No worries, they do return with a bang! I think it was a nice brief break in a way cuz while they are amazing sometimes all the bickering between the boys takes away from the gravity of the entire scene.

Looking forward to Book 4 now.

I've been waiting so long for this, I had a hard time calming down when I actually got it. And I need more so much right now DX

DID was a fun read and I LOVED seeing the Hex Boys and Aurora again. But despite the wait, I didn't get as much as I'd hoped. Because instead of six Hexy guys that I've come to love so much, I got introduced to another character: Cristiano Cacciatori. I must admit I didn't like him at all because he was taking me and Aurora away from my guys, but immediately after some... circumstances ... things changed in ways I don't feel comfortable admitting as a fangirl. (Love you Matthias)

The story was great, but felt more like a transition to something amazing (meaning it's in the next installment lol). Doesn't mean this was a filler, as we find out a whole other layer as to what happpened to Aurora before she came back to Gossamer Falls. There was a lot of action, 'romance' and romance, and with Aurora, nothing is boring. However, compared to the other two books, there wasn't an exact goal in the plot so much as Aurora finding out small things that lead to bigger plot twists without them actually showing up. If anything, the plot was more in hiding until... BAM.

I loved how the boys did show a little more of their vulnerable sides. It made me sad in some parts. Other characters could use a good strangling. And I couldn't. Stop. Laughing.

Aurora's a girl who couldn't sit down even if she tried, and I love it. Her lifestyle is as disastrous as her grades, and although I wanted to pin her down somewhere, I'm glad she never stood still. Nothing is better than a girl who takes charge (just ask Blake).

I definitely can't wait for the next one. Until then, I'll be rereading the books, fantasizing, attempting to answer all the questions I got teased with. -_- And where's Gloria, man?? Yup, definite recommend. Six hot guys with the cutest, (sometimes) most immature spiels, secret organizations that just want to kill you, a hundred plus year supply of Mandatum dirty laundry, and a hunky Italian psychopath that just makes things a little more... enticing.

Fun and educational book!

My daughter received the Snowy Day as an early Christmas present this year-which is an AWESOME book. Because of that, I requested the Rainy Day, as well. These books are wonderful-amazon recommends for 4-8, but my 2 year old loves them. My daughter has always loved books over any other toy, though. They are made of a heavier-duty paper then the typical book and the cover is a little bit puffy, so they are durable enough to put up with a toddlers inquisitive hands. These books explain some of the science behind what's happening incorporated into an entertaining story. What a GREAT idea! AND the illustrations are wonderful, too!

I bought this book for my four-year old daughter and she loves it! It has pretty illustrations and it's also educational. Although [...] says it's for ages 4-8, the Usborne website states 2-years old and up. I love the Usborne books because they are so educational and engaging to look at, which doesn't hurt!
