In the tradition of Ambrose Bierce

On skimming through my copy of "Misanthropology," I was first impressed with the layout, typography, and illustrations. I found them to be witty and innovative, playful and alive; however, some of the text itself appeared to be, well, sophomoric. Boy, was I ever wrong! On actually reading the book, I saw that what I took for lameness was in fact carefully constructed lampoon. Most of this work is satire, and it takes different forms, although a common streak of cynicism in the tradition of Ambrose Bierce does give cohesion to the work. It even sports some honest-to-God gallows humor. While each individual component is so unique that it deserves a separate review, in penance for hasty judgment I'll comment on a few pieces that I found particularly amazing.
The "Conversation" entitled "Where Are You?" purports to be a TV interview with a certain Charles Bugby who, from the secure vantage of his automobile, calmly videotapes his wife and child as they are attacked by a mountain lion. The interviewing TV host speaks with cliche-riddled jargon that sounds only too familiar, and Bugby responds with ain't-I-clever mummery laced with inappropriate French words. If I correctly interpret the "final exam" question on the book's end papers, the enemy of this piece turns out to be "we the looker, without whom nothing would be looked at, the applauders, to whom everything is owed by the performers" -- that is, we have met the enemy and he is us.
"The Excelsior Odyssey" is space-opera parody stuffed with goodies. It is an extended metaphor about departure and return, life as a trip around the Monopoly board, a voyage to the future and back. References are appropriately made to yo-yos, M.C. Escher's "Reptiles," palindromes, reversible equations, and so on. Lines from Tennyson's "Ulysses" are embedded in the text and the reader is invited to spot them all (I did). Included is a discussion on the paradox of time, randomness, and free will. The "Big Bang" is proposed as an Ancient Solipsist's solution to cosmic ennui: a self-inflicted explosion into stars and atoms and tiny bits of awareness that apparently include the matter and energy that we know about and stuff that we may never know about. The corresponding end paper question for this little opus is "What are the drawbacks to seeing all and knowing all, and what can be done about it? How might the Almighty be coping with ... absolute power?" -- in other words, we have met the Almighty and He is us.
Another memorable Conversation concerns a genie and unlimited wishes. This one is apparently intended to be the final word in the genie genre, and it may well be. How many original twists can you wring out of a genie in a bottle? Anyway, this one is both amusing and provocative. Our 21st Century Aladdin is consistently convinced by the genie's sidekick that he really doesn't want what he is about to wish for, after all. This little geniegem ends with a couple of genuine afterclaps.
There is a "Songs" section, consisting of "Little Willie" inspired nursery rhymes and parodies of greeting card verse (Reneau says Hallmark provides "Cyrano's words bought and signed by us dimwit Christians"), along with some more original -- and more interesting -- NC-17 verses of "antisocial significance."
The "Sermons," in contrast to the "Conversations," are monologues, not always delivered by Reneau himself. In "Dummy Bilking," Charles Bugby reappears as the czar of an international secret society, "The Institutionalized Mystic Nits," and uses the Internet to entrap and fleece adherents to Mystic Nitory. Speaking from the apex of his astonishing career in cynicism, he introduces to an elect few his system of plundering the wallets of the unwary, using a formula of emotional appeal, data fabrication, and scapegoatery. He develops a business model built around drunken driving, and explains in detail how to extract money from all concerned. "You'll morph into a mighty Midas, and attend your high school reunion in a golden limo, pulled by pink flamingos," crows Bugby.
One of the Sermons attempts to explain some puzzling 1890 editorials by L. Frank Baum which appear to advocate the extermination of the American Indian, for which Baum has posthumously taken some flak. I can't always tell when Reneau is just kidding, but here he is straight-arrow sober. He argues that the editorials were intended as irony. The editorials in question are reprinted here in their brief entirety, and speak for themselves. My own hunch is that Reneau's interpretation is indeed the correct one.
At times his verbosity seems a bit gratuitous, but never to the point where it jams the flow of ideas. In fact, most of this book is verbal wizardry, constantly morphing into different textures and colors. It's full of interesting ideas and quotable quotes, the stuff of which a good read is made.

A Rich Assortment of Tasty Brain Candy

Reneau H. Reneau has created a pleasing provocative potpourri of prose, plays, and poetry. This book is filled with wonderful slices of wit, wisdom, and thought-provoking ideas that are served piping hot on a bed of existentialism for the reader to enjoy at his or her leisure. The delightful and clever wordplay alone is worth the price of admission. I dare anyone not to be challenged by the lobe-wrestling that is presented in this treasure chest of humorous and candid salutations of free will, free thought, and free-for-all vivacious verbiage.

Erudite certainly, but lacking almost everything else

As usual, I received this book for free via a LibraryThing giveaway but my candid opinions appear below.

Misanthropology is a book in three parts and the number of the parts is three. It spends its time in more or less equal proportions of short plays, poetry and what the author refers to as 'sermons.'

To say that I had high hopes for this book would be an understatement. To say that they quickly evaporated somewhere in the vicinity of page 15 would be a sadly accurate fact. The author demonstrates a vast erudition and formidable vocabulary but it honestly becomes rather tiresome in short order. Even in cases in which the author has a good idea, somehow the whole thing manages to come crashing down around him by the time a conclusion is reached. Further, the illustrations, so lauded by many reviewers, are simply comic book renditions of a rather puerile nature.

On the bright side, some of the author's poetry is keenly worded and thematically amusing. In particular, 'Twinkle, Twinkle' is an adaptation of 'Twinkle, Twinkle little star' adjusted to be more astronomically accurate. Sadly, it is a rare coruscating gem atop a disappointing heap of offal.

In summary, I wouldn't bother with this had it not come freely of its own accord to my doorstep. The author is a skilled wordsmith but comes up lacking when a story line is required. Anyone experiencing a 'laugh storm' while reading this book (as I have seen some reviewers indicate), is probably in need of medical attention due to a mirth-inducing brain aneurysm.

Great little Bible study book for kids...and mom

I am a homeschool mom and was looking for a nice Bible study to do with my elementary kids. This one had some good reviews, so I decided to give it a try. I am so glad that I did! It starts some really wonderful discussions and some thought provoking ideas for both the kids and mom. This book has become one of our favorite parts of school time.

Love this tool for our devotional time as a family !!!

I can't speak enough about this book . We have four kids from ages 4 months to 9 years old and we all absolutely love it and look forward to it every night as we do our devotional time. This book has brought us closer as a family while enjoying our time with God and his word. This is a great tool to dig in with the whole family I highly recommend it. Hope they have another coming out soon kids are already looking forward to it !!!

There are many reasons to visit the beautiful Southwest, a land of mystery, magic and mayhem—and shifters.

Sometimes a wolf is just a wolf…except when it's more. Shifters roam the Southwest, in packs and alone, struggling to survive. When it's discovered, by one wounded outcast, that gay shifters also have destined mates, the shifter world is forced to rethink its beliefs. A change in the shifter hierarchy is shaking up the packs, making new rules and forcing the shifters' archaic ways out the door. For some, the changes may come too late; their faith in their fellow shifters has been shattered.

For others, the changes are embraced with open minds and hearts—and a hope that burns deep inside. To be accepted, part of the pack, instead of living with the threat of being shunned for their sexual preferences—many shifters are free for the first time. They have the hope of finding their destined mates, men who fill the emptiness in their souls.

But not everyone in the shifter world is willing to accept the changes, destined mates or not. They don't want their ways to change, and they will do anything, no matter how evil, to keep the packs under their power.

It’s no secret that I love the Southwestern Shifters series and loved that I got to gorge myself on the series in August. So you won’t be shocked to learn that I was beyond thrilled when I found out about Retrograde’s release and I nearly went through the roof when I discovered that Bradford had written it as another chapter in Marcus and Nathan’s life. I love all of the couples in the series and each has a special place in my heart, but with all the Nathan has dealt with as Marcus was under attack from more than one quarter, it felt right for them to get another installment in the series and Bradford managed to make me love this couple even more than I already did.

Because of assassination attempts and challenges for Marcus’s position, Nathan has been on edge for a while and having to kill another individual (even one who was bad) in order to save Marcus’s life makes that edge even finer. It’s not that Nathan regrets saving Marcus’s life or even that he killed to do so, but rather that he was forced to take another’s life. Having been raised by a human, Nathan still finds the easy acceptance of violence among shifters too much to bear at times. Sensing that his mate needs to get away and realizing that they need a chance to reinforce their bond before an upcoming conference of the Alpha Anaxes, Marcus makes arrangements for a short getaway for just the two of them. Having the chance to let their wolves run free in a safe environment that’s not fenced in, to spend time alone with just the two of them, and to connect sexually on a more primal level does wonders for both men. Yet even on vacation they can’t seem to get away from the needs of other wolves when they discover a wild pack of young shifters who know nothing about the shifter society. Thank goodness Marcus and Nathan know of a wolf who loves to take in strays – Gabe. But when demands of Marcus’s position require that they return to the compound, they are once again faced with treachery when another plot to take out an AA is discovered. For once, Marcus wasn’t the target but because it was being attempted in his home it affected him no less. Thankfully Marcus has a pack filled with loyal and intelligent shifters who were able to help thwart yet another assassination attempt and strengthen ties with other honorable AAs.

Retrograde was another excellent addition to the Southwestern Shifters series. I loved watching Nathan and Marcus get back to nature so to speak and embrace their wolf so fully. It was obvious it did them good mentally, but it also made for some smoking hot sex scenes. They were lucky they didn’t start a forest fire with as hot as they got. I liked that Bradford made another AA the target in this novel and that for once Marcus didn’t have the bullseye on his back. I found his handling of the territory situation to be very telling of the kind of man Marcus is – a good man who only wants what’s best for all shifters. I loved meeting Lexxie and hope to see more of her in the future and learning more about her heritage. That Bradford foreshadowed the changes that are coming for Marcus and his pack made me so freaking happy because that means more books are in the future. But the end. Oh my word was the end sweet. I mean… We’ve got puppies!

Things are changing and they’re coming fast, what Marcus and Nathan needs is some time alone to decide what to do but their private vacation is interrupted when they discover a pack of young shifters barely surviving in this gripping paranormal romance. There was no way that I could stop reading this story once I began because the story is chock full of emotional turmoil, excitement and passion all involving one of my favorite couples, Marcus and Nathan, and I have to tell you I can’t wait to find out what happens next with all those changes and of course that important event will be the most exciting for them in the years to come.

I totally enjoyed this series I love the whole true mate love in a day thing and I just love all the adventures they had I'm so sad to see this series end. I really wanted more books about where they move to sigh I hope ms Bradford continues it.

About the Author

Nigel Nicholson has been honored by the American Academy of Management for his contribution to business theory and method.  He is a professor at the London Business School, where he leads the Family Business Research Initiative.  A former journalist, he is a frequent commentator in the media on business affairs and has published 15 books and over 200 articles.

Grant E. Gordon is the Director General for the Institute for Family Business. He is a fifth generation member and Non-Executive Director of William Grant & Sons, a family business that changed over from family to non-family leadership in 2000.

Good work on the research

Gallo, Ford, Guinness, IBM, Gucchi, Mondavi, Reliance and Addidas... Global brands? Before they were these brands they were family owned companies (or family run in the case of IBM). Authors Grant Gordon and Nigel Nicholson do a fairly decent job in their research of these family business as well as many others. They give summarized histories of the businesses germinating and taking off. They even give genealogical breakdowns of the families in question. But where they really score is that they have been able to analyze these situations on both an organizational behavior level as well as that of a psychological level.

The authors are quick to point out in the beginning of this book that there are many advantages to being in a family run business. Decisions are made quicker. Conflicts can often tend to be resolved in a more efficient manner. The businesses are often more profitable and last longer than a "corporate" business, that is, with professional management and not family management. They also point out that family friction can be good for the business in certain instances. But it is the struggle for control that generally unwinds everything.

The book itself is written in a very interesting style. It could pass for a professional business book, a university text book or a non-fiction book that is written for pleasure. I have to commend the authors on this - especially since this was a joint effort and not one man doing all of the written production.

Throughout Family Wars we see the causes of the inter-family strife and are generally walked through the resolutions - and sometimes there really aren't any. Gordon and Nicholson show us the several models where familial business friction occurs: When the head of the family doesn't want to release control, sibling rivalry, disagreements in company direction, etc. It would seem that no matter what the background, nationality, era, product or business model these same issues tend to manifest themselves in family companies. That in and of itself lends to the mystique of this book.

"Family Wars" - An indispensable treatise for one and all...

An old business adage that runs in the family business parlance puts it rather simply, "The first generation starts, the second builds and the third sells." But in the true purview of realism, do all family businesses rest on the same gritty axiom? Are families really bound taut in `intimate, dynamic, honest and loyal' strands of inter-personal business? Moreover, does the presence of conflict within family businesses itself mean failure? These are some of those integral questions that this compelling read shall endeavour to answer.

A comprehensive discourse on conflict within family business, `Family Wars' dwells on those inequalities and flaws that keep families from embarking onto shared entrepreneurship, yet resonantly discussing the indispensability of family firms in the economy.

`Family Wars' runs you through a set of melodramatic and enthralling case studies (over 20 in number), which splits family conflict into different categories highlighting the stringent irony of blood-ties. Some of the themes interwoven are the `father- son conflict' (Gallo wine family saga), `sibling rivalry' (Ambani family),`the insularity trap' (Guinness story) and Schism (Pritzker empire saga) to name a few. Certain issues, which arise between generations like overpowering personalities and nepotism, are also explored.

As an intriguing illustration, the theme of `Parental Oppression' is presented through the Ford Family case (Chapter 5), which depicts an obsessive personality in the form of a narcissistic leader, Henry Ford who focussed exclusively on himself, lacked empathy and totally neglected `succession management' in his organisation to the extent that after the untimely death of his son, he was dethroned by his daughter- in- law leaving a trail of psychological debris. The reader is led to believe that leadership and personality are closely intertwined. They make greatness but at the same time also embody flaws that need to be dealt with.

The contents in the book seem to blend with one strand that remains uniquely present in the fabric of the family and its firm - personality. An informative discussion on personality and its building blocks is followed by the citation of the `paradox of inherited personality'. We are led to understand that 50 percent of our character is significantly heritable (from our genes) and the rest comes from our life experiences. The reader is guided to conclude that `entrepreneurs do not breed entrepreneurs' except by the luck of the `gene lottery'.

`Family Wars' is authored by Nigel Nicholson and Grant Gordon, the first being an eminent professor of organisational behaviour and psychology at the London Business School and author of the critically approbated `Managing the Human Animal' and the latter, director general of the UK's Institute for Family Business. The book makes for a mould of some robust research and the pragmatic perspectives of an acclaimed academic and a fifth generation member of a reputed Scottish family business.

The book concludes with a set of some useful and pertinent recommendations on delving deeper into the insights of human nature, management and family dynamics. Further, guidelines on how firms can fortify themselves against conflict are also provided as well as evaluation of how people can make conflict productive in family firms.

A valuable and highly recommended resource guide for all, dealing with issues related to conflict, both within the family as well as the non-family firms.
