Misleading title, not meeting expectations

The title of this book is misleading. It should have been called something along the lines of "The History of Mixing and Scratching", which is this is the real focus of this book. If you want to learn about the people who played a large role in the development of DJing this book could be for you. However, if you want to learn about the skills and techniuques of mixing and scratching this is not the right one as these topics are really just handled at a very basic level over a few pages towards the end of the book. From reading the title and the editorial review, I had expected much more. Disappointed!

Fascinating read for everyone, complete instructions for scratching

Beerklee College of Music professor Stephen Webber writes the interesting account of scratching from the beginning to its growing acceptance as a legimate music form. Professor Webber was the first to teach turntabling as a regular course in a music college. His Stylus Symphony featuring turntables was premeired in November 2007. The book makes an important contribution to a neglected area of the history of music. But the great contribution is that it is a complete and fully illustrated text on the art of the DJ. The novice might choose to begin with Professor Webber's first book "Tutntable Technique". "DJ Skills" goes beyond the introductory elements of scratching and mixing and will prove to be an asset even to professional. Other books on this new musical form will surely be written, but this book will always be considered the definitive work.

Not bad...but not the best.

This book is caught between being an "instructional" book on how to DJ...and a history of the DJ, and because of that - it does neither perfectly. I like much of what Professor Webber includes here, and his background as an educator is beyond question. But Stephen Webber is NOT a DJ....in any real sense of the word, and this clearly shows. This also permeated his earlier work - where he brought the idea of notating scratching to a great institution like Berklee College of Music....yet and still in the end, he is not a great turntablist, nor has he paid his dues in the dark and sweating underground clubs and raves where DJs really learn their chops.

If you want to read the definite title on "how to DJ", pick up How to DJ Properly (How to DJ Right) by Frank Broughton and Bill Brewster. If you want to pick up the definitive book on the history of DJing, you should get "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" also by Brewster and Broughton.

I used this book in my freshman calculus course quite some time ago, but found it very readable and well laid out. Since then I've gone back to grad school and am taking courses in mathematical physics and quantum mechanics. This book has been such an invaluable resource that I just bought another copy to replace the old one (which is totally falling apart!). It has been an essential tool for solving the grueling problem sets that have been assigned to me this semester.
Being that this is an old and out of print edition, I was able to buy it for next to nothing, which makes it even better!
Besides, calculus doesn't change, just the pretty pictures and graphs that get put into the calculus text books. Unless you need a certain book for a particular class, you'll be better off buying the 6th ed. of this book. It's much more affordable and has all the information as a $100 text...just less pictures.

I used this textbook in my Calculus I & II classes, in college, back in 1983-4. I actually studied this textbook, outside of class, and with the study problems, with answers in the back of this book, I learned much of calculus on my own! I loaned it to my math teacher at a vocational school (dropped out of Engineering classes, went to vo-tech to become a Technician, instead -- still loving it!), and the teacher tried to order copies for her future classes! Loaned it to a fellow technician, on the job, years later, who told me he "collects" calculus textbooks -- he wanted a copy for himself, as well. To me, this is a great calculus text, if you have a solid understanding of Algebra. YMMV. Cheers!

Educational and entertaining - a must read for a fan

I stumbled upon Chris through Twitter and and am so happy I did and it led me to this book. As a football fan I hate feeling that there are complex elements to the game that I haven't fully understood. I might know what a zone blitz is in theory, but didn't know the variations, history, or true reasoning behind it. This book is so informative in such an entertaining and easily digestible way, I learn so much every time I pick it up, and I find myself going back to chapters to refresh my memory on certain topics.

Chris Brown has mastered the art of smart football writing

Chris Brown has a gift for talking about football-related topics and personalities at a level that is a lot deeper, more insightful, and more interesting than what you are going to hear on TV. I am a high school football coach and an avid reader, so I have a library of football coaching books, but this is not like those. Brown picks a topic of interest and dives in, but it's not a how-to book as much as it's the written musings of an intelligent football junkie who is sharing what he has learned. The book is more or less a collection of essays, most of which came from his online website (which is also very much worth your time). If you like football, and you like to read, take a look at this book.

Must Read for Smart Football fans

Chris Brown had been in the forefront of teaching us about the game within the game, but his legal career took him from us. Smartfootball.com, and the older site at smartfootball.blogspot.com were the first of their kind. Smartfootball the book and the website were my introduction to the deeper mysteries of the game. I came to Smartfootball for help to understand the NFL. I learned about the Offensive Revolution that was taking over College football. Because of Chris Brown, I got into college ball, albeit nowhere near as deep as NFL, I watch college ball after the season, recorded off YouTube.
Chris documented the NCAA offensive Revolution's influence on the NFL. Smartfootball readers were asked: Why jam up the Line of scrimmage with extra blockers to run the ball, when the Defenders will follow them, creating a no gain scrum?
I'd say he was critical in explaining Read Option's explosion in the NFL to all of us who are fascinated by it. All His Grantland pieces linked from Smartfootball in 2012 as Russell Wilson, RG3 and Colin Kaepernich were exploding onto the scene and most NFL fans had never seen this before. He taught us about packaged plays. He taught us how defenses were adapting.
Its sad that teaching smart fans even selling this book will never earn Chris as much as being a lawyer.

A must read for everyone

This book should be part of the curriculum in every grade school. This book describes exactly how I use apps like Instagram and Facebook and what is going on in the back of my mind. I would guess that’s the case for most people judging by what my friends post. Everyone who spends time using social media apps should read this book. The author describes why I habitually open social media apps every time I’m bored for a minute and why I feel like I instantly need to look at each new notification the second it arrives no matter what I'm busy with when it arrives. It makes sense that the social media companies make their apps addicting so people spend more time using them and looking at the advertisements which makes them more money the more you use the app.

Not worth buying free

There seems to be problems with transcribing some parts of books such as this. Throughout, the major turning points of the stories, which are quotes from either letters or newspaper articles, are completely missing. I am guessing that the missing sections appear in italics or some variant form.
This not the only book in which I have seen this -- makes the entire thing useless. The whole development of the story involves newspaper ads -- all of which are missing.

About the Author
Heinrich Strathmann is Professor Emeritus of the University of Twente, The Netherlands. He obtained his basic education in Physical Chemistry at the University of Darmstadt in Germany where he received his Dr.-Ing. in 1965. He worked for several years in the membrane based industry in the United States and in Germany. He is also Associate Professor at the University of Stuttgart and Honorary Prrofessor at South China Central University.
Dr. Strathmann is on the editorial board of various scientific journals and is author of three books on membrane science and technology. In 2007 he was awarded by the European Membrane Society with the R.M. Barrer Price.

Mean Streets

I'm one of those twisted souls who loves to torture herself with tales of lonely hearts, toxic relationships and terminal illness, but who avoids books and movies featuring hard-edged violence, especially involving women. So imagine my surprise when I practically inhaled every tension-laden page of Bartender Wanted!

Upon reflection, it's easy to see why. Author Maureen Anne Jennings has created a narrator of such charm and wit I'd follow her anywhere--including places where very bad things happen. Jennings puts me right there with stubborn, plucky Rose Leary as she fends off creepy advances by men she encounters at her job at a bar called My World, tries to get some sleep in an apartment that suddenly does not feel safe, or decides (stupidly but entertainingly) not to bother police detective Frank Butler with more evidence that her life is in danger. Jennings's vivid descriptions of New York City are often humorous and always evocative. I delighted in this Rose Leary mystery for the same reason I've relished Raymond Chandler's novels, because what Chandler did for 1940s Los Angeles, Maureen Anne Jennings does for 1980s New York. Let her take you there!

Next book, please!

Bartender Wanted is a fun-to-read, well-written crime novel. The main character, Rose Leary, has an edge to her, which I love. The plot was complicated enough that I had to keep track of each character and what part they played in the story, without being confusing. I didn't guess who-done-it until the very end. I definitely recommend Bartender Wanted to anyone who enjoys detective novels. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

Authentic Fun

Bartender Wanted is my first purchase, ever, of an Amazon-published book, and I'm happy to say that my daring was rewarded. Within the first two paragraphs we learn there's a killer on the loose in 1980s New York City, and we meet a tough-minded woman who's a bartender-plus-mystery writer as well as an articulate wiseass with a wicked sense of humor. As someone who lived in Manhattan throughout the eighties, I can vouch for the book's authenticity and flavor; as a reader of mystery novels, I can admire the cleverness of the plot and the sympathetic characters. There's danger, fun, genuine surprise, and even an engaging romance.

I can recommend Bartender Wanted wholeheartedly.

In recent years there has been heightened interest in the clinical and legal management of families in which children resist contact with one parent and become aligned with the other following divorce. Families affected by these dynamics require disproportionate resources and time from mental health and legal professionals, and cases require a specialized clinical approach. Traditional models of individual and family therapy are not designed to address these issues, and strategies and resources for mental health and legal professionals have been extremely limited.

Overcoming Parent-Child Contact Problems describes interventions for families experiencing a high conflict divorce impasse where a child is resisting contact with a parent. It examines in detail one such intervention, the Overcoming Barriers approach, involving the entire family and combining psycho-education and clinical intervention. The book is divided into two parts: Part I presents an overview of parental alienation, including clinical approaches and a critical analysis of the many challenges associated with traditional outpatient family-based interventions. Part II presents the Overcoming Barriers approach, describing core aspects of the intervention and ways to adapt its clinical techniques to outpatient practice. Overcoming Parent-Child Contact Problems is geared toward mental health clinicians and legal professionals who work with families in high conflict and where a child resists visitation with a parent.

About the Author

Abigail M. Judge, PhD, is a clinical and child and family forensic psychologist. Dr. Judge maintains a private practice in Cambridge, MA, is a Forensic Consultant at the Law and Psychiatry Service at Massachusetts General Hospital, and holds an academic appointment at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Judge provides psychotherapy, consultation, forensic evaluation, expert witness testimony, and reunification intervention.

Robin M. Deutsch, Ph.D., ABPP, is a child and family forensic psychologist, board certified in couples and family practice. She is Director of the Center of Excellence for Children, Families and the Law at William James College in Newton, MA, where she developed the Certificate in Child and Family Forensic Issues and the Child and Family Evaluation Service. She is a founding Board member of Overcoming Barriers, was formerly an Associate Clinical Professor at Harvard Medical School, and was Director of Training and Forensic Services at the Children and the Law program at Massachusetts General Hospital for over 20 years. She provides mediation, consultation, reunification intervention, expert witness testimony, and parenting coordination services, as well as training for mental health professionals, lawyers, and judges on child custody evaluation, issues related to high-conflict divorce, and parenting coordination.

Another Perspective

I have attended an Overcoming BArriers Program and was not impressed. They did nothing for me and my estranged family other than reinforce their negative views and their expertise was not regarded as helpful in my case. I found the camp ultimately not helpful in the least. I have been asked to write reviews but feel as if they cull out all negative or not positive critiques and wish to only present hopeful scenarios. My concerns about the camp and its direction went unadressed. Little to no outreach post camp experience other than to write a review.

Great resource !

I am a therapist working with children and families in high conflict divorce situations and working to reunify parents and children in these families. I found this book an invaluable resource. Not only does it give critical concrete interventions, it also includes tools for psycho-education (which may not always be intuitive) and points out the ways traditional family therapy may not succeed in mending parent/child relationships. It also highlights how the parent that children continue to see may unintentionally or intentionally contribute to the problem and offers ideas to assist in changing that behavior. A great resource for therapist and attorneys who deal with families in these situations.

This book is an informative and superb look at this very difficult and challenging problem. I am impressed at how thoroughly the concepts, research, and practice have been brought together to hopefully help move the ball down the field and make things better, especially for the kids.
