Asher is back and better than ever!

Madness Review

I really enjoyed Ash: the frist book in the Asher Bensen series. In fact it's one of my favorite books ever and Asher is one of my favorite heroes of all time. I can really relate to him. He has had a really rough life which is honestly a huge understatement. He suffer's from survivor's guilt, PTSD and probably a huge bout of depression on top of it. And then there's his drinking. I think it's safe to assume that Asher is definitely an alcoholic but who can blame the poor guy. If you've read Ash then you know by now that while in the military his convoy was hit by an IED and most of his friends and comrades were killed and after waking up in the hospital he started hearing voices in his head. It didn't take him long to figure out that he could hear other people's thoughts. Being psychic sounds cool but would it really be? Especially if you couldn't control it very well. I don't think I'd want to know what everyone is thinking and I sure wouldn't want anyone knowing what was going on in my mind. As the day wears the mind grows exhausted just like the body does so has an even harder time shutting out all the echoes and alcohol seems to be the only thing that helps him do that so it's no wonder he drinks all the time. I know I would.

Madness was such a good book. I really thought Ash would be next to impossible to top. It was nonstop action and the interaction between the characters was hilarious so it felt like it was an impossible feat to write an even better sequel but wow was I so wrong. Madness was sheer awesomesauce. Not only that but the title of the book was very fitting. Even the chapter titles are awesome. Take chapter 14 for instance which is titled Gigantor and Short Round Go for a Ride. How does that not grab you by the eyeballs and make you want to read it? Sheer awesomesauce.

After the hectic events in the first book Asher has barely had time to recover. He's back to his old smelly, drunk self and who can blame him when Drew his detective friend shows up unannounced with the ever short and sassy Nami in tow to recruit his help against Agent Smith who is still out on the loose. Even Sammy shows up so we're reunited with the old cast once again. They barely have time for some witty banter before all heck breaks loose. Agent Smith unleashes a new weapon of terror on the locals in the town where Ash lives and once again he and his friends are stuck smack dab in the middle of the chaos. Once again the world needs a hero to stop Smith's evil. Unfortunately all we have is Asher. Fortunately though Asher is completely awesome and up to the task.

The whole town has gone insane and Jason Brant effortelessly draws upon his experience writing horror novels to instill a great deal of nightmarish dread into the story. The events that take place are truly horrifying but between crazy townfolks running around torturing and killing everything in sight you're treated to some of the best dialogue in any series ever. The banter between Asher, Drew and especially Nami had me cracking up the whole book. In times of stress Asher falls back on his wit and sharp sense of humor to help lighten the situation and his snarky comments and sheer coolness are only topped by Nami's sharper tongue and colorful language. I hope the two of them will go on many more adventures together because having them both in the same room is just too much fun.

I could literally go on all day long about this book. I've come to expect great characters, witty dialogue, non-stop action along with insane twists and turns that are extremely unique. And trust me Madness has some extreme twists to it that I never saw coming. Jason Brant pulls out all the stops with this one and once again hits a home run. There's a big reason why he's one of my favorite authors of all time and each new book just cements his place in my hall of fame. It's impossible not to have a great time reading his books. It's impossible not to fall in love with his characters and to come away from each book wanting more. I truly cannot wait for the next Asher Bensen story. The author has such a unique way of telling stories and I've rarely seen anyone write so many books where the action is full throttle from start to finish. There's never a dull moment in Madness and I'm always completely blown away that with as much action as there is his characters seem to just grow in depth throughout the story. It's hard to balance action and character development at the same time but this seems to be a skill that Jason Brant has mastered a long time ago. I really can't say enough good things about Madness. If you can only buy one book this year then this is the one to get. If you can buy two then make sure you get the first book Ash also. This is one series you do not want to miss.

Too Sadistic and Depressing
By Amazon Customer
I read this book because I really enjoyed the balance of action, tension, and humor in the first book in this series. While this second book had action, tension, and humor, the balance wasn't there. The great measure of talented storytelling was spent on the details of torture: the horror and helplessness of the victims, and the psychotic glee of the perpetrators as they committed atrocities. The ending came across like a documentary on the psychological effects of genocide--realistic and depressing. The read was disappointing compared to the entertaining escape I enjoyed with the first book.

Excellent book in the Asher Benson series!
By Rick in Ft. Worth
For someone who doesn't really write reviews, I find myself at the keyboard again. I'm a new fan of Mr. Brant and it may be sacrilege to say it, but I put him up there with King and Koontz. His Asher Benson books are hard to put down. I won't go into details about this book but the action starts pretty quick and is non-stop until the end.

Not only is the main character funny (read sarcastic) he is a likable kind of alcoholic. The supporting characters get inside of your head and make you laugh and cry. It's worth the price of the books just to get to know Nami. Read the series and you too will fall in 'like' with her.

Thanks for the excellent read Mr. Brant and I'll be there for the next Asher Benson book. Now, I'm going to get a beer and start on The Hunger series. (Hey! I'm drinking with Jason!) I'm buying the Omnibus edition because I have no doubt that I will be reading all three books anyway.
